This worksheet is for practicing the Hangul double vowels. These are the 11 vowels made by combining two basic vowels into one. Some double vowels, such as ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅝ, ㅞ, ㅟ and ㅢ, contain the sounds of both parts. When you practice reading them, say each part slowly and then blend them together: ㅗ + ㅏ → "o-a" → "wa".

The 11 double vowels
| Vowel | Made from | Romanization | Sounds like |
|---|---|---|---|
| ㅐ | ㅏ + ㅣ | ae | "e" in bed |
| ㅔ | ㅓ + ㅣ | e | "e" in bed (same as ㅐ for most speakers) |
| ㅒ | ㅑ + ㅣ | yae | "ye" in yes |
| ㅖ | ㅕ + ㅣ | ye | "ye" in yes |
| ㅘ | ㅗ + ㅏ | wa | "wa" in wander |
| ㅙ | ㅗ + ㅐ | wae | "we" in wet |
| ㅚ | ㅗ + ㅣ | oe | "we" in wet |
| ㅝ | ㅜ + ㅓ | wo | "wo" in wonder |
| ㅞ | ㅜ + ㅔ | we | "we" in wet |
| ㅟ | ㅜ + ㅣ | wi | "wee" in week |
| ㅢ | ㅡ + ㅣ | ui | ㅡ gliding quickly into ㅣ |
Note: the printable sheet labels ㅚ as "we", which is how it sounds. Its official romanization is oe.
Tips for learning the double vowels
- Read the parts. Every double vowel is two basic vowels written together, so if you know ㅗ and ㅏ, you already know ㅘ.
- Don't stress about identical sounds. ㅐ and ㅔ sound the same for most Seoul speakers today, and so do ㅙ, ㅚ and ㅞ. You still need the right spelling, but not a different sound.
- Stroke order: write the first vowel completely, then the second, from top to bottom and left to right.
What's next
After this worksheet, you will learn how to make a letter by combining consonants and vowels. Continue with the Hangul syllable blocks worksheet (가 나 다 라) and write your first Korean syllables and words.
