TOPIK 6 Grammar: The Complete Guide to All 11 Patterns
Date: October 19, 2026

Introduction

TOPIK 6 is the top of the mountain — and its grammar list is the shortest of all: just 11 patterns. These are the most literary forms in Korean, drawn from classical concession, formal causation, and absolute negation. You will meet them in literature, editorials, speeches, and the hardest TOPIK reading passages, rarely in everyday chat.

Because the list is short, this guide is the place to master them completely: all 11 TOPIK 6 grammar patterns taught on Learn Korean Today, grouped by function, each linking to its own lesson with a full explanation and example sentences from real Korean articles.

Working your way up? The TOPIK 5 Grammar guide covers the advanced level just below. If you are ready for the summit, start with Part 1 — concession at any cost is the soul of TOPIK 6 style.

Part 1. Concession at Any Cost

Concessions with resolve in them: I will do it even if it costs everything, even if I am late, even if you are busy — and if it comes to that, rather than this.
PatternMeaningExample
-(으)ㄹ지언정even if / even at the cost of실패할지언정 포기하지 않겠어요.Even if I fail, I will not give up.
-(으)ㄹ망정even if / (rather) though비록 늦을망정 끝까지 가 보겠어요.Though I may be late, I'll see it through to the end.
-기로서니even if / just because아무리 바쁘기로서니 연락도 못 하겠어요?No matter how busy you are, can't you even call?
-(으)ㄹ 바에(야)rather than / if it comes to후회할 바에야 처음부터 하지 않는 게 나아요.Rather than regret it later, it's better not to do it at all.

Part 2. Formal Causes and Emphasis

The formal machinery of essays and speeches: owing to, not only — and also, and now that the situation has come to this.
PatternMeaningExample
-(으)로 말미암아owing to / due to그의 노력으로 말미암아 성공할 수 있었어요.It was owing to his effort that we could succeed.
-거니와and also / not only그는 실력이 있거니와 인품도 훌륭해요.He is not only skilled but also of excellent character.
-(으)ㄴ/는 마당에now that / given the situation이미 약속한 마당에 취소할 수 없어요.Now that we've already promised, we can't cancel.

Part 3. Absolute Negation and Mere Limitation

Saying 'no way' in two registers — and its quiet opposite, 'nothing more than' — plus doing something only half-heartedly.
PatternMeaningExample
-(으)ㄹ 턱이 없다there is no way네가 그걸 알 턱이 없어요.There's no way you could know that.
-(으)ㄹ 리 만무하다highly unlikely그가 약속을 어길 리 만무해요.It is highly unlikely that he would break his promise.
-(으)ㄹ 따름이다only / merely저는 시키는 대로 했을 따름이에요.I merely did as I was told.
-는 둥 마는 둥half-heartedly그는 밥을 먹는 둥 마는 둥 하고 나갔어요.He barely touched his food and went out.

Common Confusions at TOPIK 6

-(으)ㄹ 턱이 없다 vs -(으)ㄹ 리 만무하다

Both deny a possibility completely. 턱이 없다 is the spoken, emphatic form — "no way, not in a million years." 리 만무하다 is its formal written counterpart, built from Sino-Korean vocabulary, and belongs in reports and essays. Same meaning, different worlds.

-(으)ㄹ지언정 vs -(으)ㄹ망정

Both concede. 지언정 accepts a real cost and holds the line — "even if it kills the plan, I won't yield." 망정, usually paired with 비록, concedes a smaller drawback before a positive resolution — "though I may be late, I will finish." 지언정 is defiance; 망정 is perseverance.

-(으)ㄹ 바에(야) and 차라리

바에(야) almost always invites 차라리 ("rather") in the next clause: 후회할 바에야 차라리 하지 마세요 — "rather than regret it, just don't do it." If your sentence has no 'rather' alternative waiting, 바에(야) is probably the wrong choice.

How to Study These 11 Patterns

1. Read for register, not just meaning. Every TOPIK 6 pattern has a plain cousin from earlier levels (턱이 없다 ↔ 리 만무하다; 때문에 ↔ 말미암아). Knowing when the literary form is expected — essays, speeches, literature — is the actual skill.
2. Meet them in the wild. These patterns are rare even in news, so search the advanced reading lessons and the example sentences inside each pattern's lesson here; the site collects real occurrences for you.
3. Use them sparingly in speech. In conversation, one TOPIK 6 form signals erudition; three in a row sound like a costume. In TOPIK writing, though, they are exactly what the graders look for.
4. Finish the map. With these 11, you have seen all 257 patterns on this site — from TOPIK 1 particles to here. Revisit any level from the grammar library.

What to Learn Next

This is the final level — there is no TOPIK 7. From here, the work is depth, not new lists: reread the TOPIK 5 Grammar guide to keep the advanced frames fresh, work through the grammar library by TOPIK level, and read the advanced reading lessons until these 11 patterns stop looking like exhibits and start looking like tools.
All 11 patterns above are from the TOPIK 6 grammar list on Learn Korean Today. Each linked lesson includes a full explanation and example sentences from real Korean articles.
