지난해 12월 흑인 아이를 출산한 티파니 스코어와 스티븐 밀스 부부. 이들은 불임 클리닉의 과실로 자신들의 아이가 아닌 '비백인' 아이가 태어났다며 소송을 제기했다.

In December last year, the couple Tiffany Scourr and Steven Mills gave birth to a black child. They filed a lawsuit, claiming that due to the negligence of the fertility clinic, a "non-white" child was born instead of their own child.

소장에 따르면 이들 부부는 2020년 체외수정 시술을 위해 자신들의 가임 배아 3개를 해당 클리닉에 보관했다. 그러나 아이가 백인인 부모와 외모상 확연히 다른 인종적 특징을 보이자 유전자 검사를 진행했고, 그 결과 아이와 부부 사이에 생물학적 연관성이 전혀 없다는 사실이 확인됐다.

According to the lawsuit, the couple had their 3 viable embryos stored at the clinic for in vitro fertilization in 2020. However, when the child was born with clearly different racial features compared to the white parents, they conducted a genetic test, which confirmed that there was absolutely no biological connection between the child and the couple.

이들의 변호인 존 스카롤라 변호사는 지난달 병원 측에 서한을 보내 배아 처리 경위와 부부의 배아가 어디로 갔는지에 대한 설명을 요구했으나 충분한 답변을 받지 못했다고 밝혔다. 또한 자신들의 배아가 다른 사람에게 이식돼 또 다른 피해가 발생했을 가능성에 대해서도 우려를 표했다.

The couple's lawyer, John Scarola, said he sent a letter to the hospital last month demanding an explanation of the handling of the embryos and where the couple's embryos went, but did not receive a satisfactory response. He also expressed concern that their embryos may have been implanted in someone else, causing further harm.

아울러 배아 혼동으로 피해를 입은 다른 가족이 있는지 여부를 조사하고 이를 법적으로 밝히도록 재판부에 요청했다.

Furthermore, he requested the court to investigate whether there are other families who have been harmed by the embryo mix-up and to legally establish this.
