Iran is planning to propose investment opportunities in its oil and gas industry to the United States in order to prevent military action from the Trump administration and revive nuclear negotiations. Iran seems to have drawn inspiration from the recent situation in Venezuela. After ousting the Nicolas Maduro regime in Venezuela, President Trump has been pushing for US companies to lead the reconstruction of the local oil industry.

미국 에너지정보청(EIA)에 의하면 이란의 천연가스·석유 매장량은 2023년 기준 각각 전 세계 2·3위 규모다. 미국은 트럼프 집권 1기인 2018년 국제사회의 이란 핵합의(포괄적 공동행동 계획·JCPOA)를 탈퇴하고 에너지 수출 차단 등 대 이란 제재를 복원한 바 있다.

According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), Iran's natural gas and oil reserves are the second and third largest in the world as of 2023. In 2018, during Trump's first term, the US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) and restored sanctions on Iran, including blocking its energy exports.

이란 외무부는 미국 투자 제안에 대한 구체적 언급을 피하면서도 협상 대표인 아바스 아라그치 이란 외무장관이 미국과의 잠재적 경제 협력 가능성을 검토해 왔다고 강조했다. 미국과 이란은 이날 스위스 제네바에서 오만 중재로 3차 핵 협상을 시작했다.

While the Iranian Foreign Ministry avoided specific details about the investment proposal to the US, it emphasized that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Iran's chief negotiator, has been exploring the potential for economic cooperation with the US. The US and Iran have begun their third round of nuclear negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland, with Oman acting as a mediator.
