옛날 어느 마을에 나무꾼이 있었습니다.
Once there was a woodcutter in a village.

어느 날, 나무꾼은 산에서 나무를 하다가 그만 연못 속에 도끼를 ‘풍덩’ 빠뜨렸습니다.
One day, the woodcutter ‘flopped’ an axe into the pond while he was tree-planting in the mountains.

나무꾼은 “아이고, 하나밖에 없는 도끼인데. 아이고.”라고 하며 계속 울었습니다.
The woodcutter said, “Oh, it’s the only ax. “Oh, dear,” he cried.

그런데 갑자기 연못물이 움직이더니, 신령님이 나왔습니다.
Then suddenly, the pond water moved, and a spirit came out.

나무꾼은 놀라 말했습니다.
The woodcutter said in surprise.

“누구세요?”
“Who are you?”

“나는 이 산을 지키는 신령입니다. 왜 울고 있습니까?”
“I am the spirit of protecting this mountain. Why are you crying?”

“하나밖에 없는 도끼를 연못에 빠뜨렸습니다. 아이고”
“I dropped the one and only axe into the pond. Oh, my”

“내가 찾아주겠습니다.”
“I’ll find it for you.”

“그렇다면 정말 감사하겠습니다!”
“Then I’d really appreciate it!”

나무꾼은 신령님을 기다렸습니다.
The woodcutter waited for the spirit.

한참 뒤 연못물이 움직이더니, 다시 신령님이 나왔습니다.
After a long time, the pond water moved, and the spirit came out again.

“이 금도끼가 당신 도끼 맞습니까?”
“Is this gold axe yours?”

“아니요, 내 도끼는 그렇게 비싼 도끼가 아닙니다.”
“No, my axe is not such an expensive axe.”

“그럼 다시 찾아보고 오겠습니다.”
“Then I’ll look it up again and come back.”

하면서 다시 들어갔습니다. 한참 뒤 연못물이 또 움직이더니, 다시 신령님이 나왔습니다.
And then he went back in. A long time later, the pond water moved again, and the spirit came out again.

“자. 이 은도끼가 당신 도끼 맞습니까?”
“Now, is this silver axe yours?”

“내 것은 비싼것도 아니고 새것도 아닙니다. 하고 나무꾼이 말했습니다.
“Mine is neither expensive nor new.” said the Woodman.

신령님은 다시 연못 속으로 들어갔습니다.
The spirit went back into the pond.

또 한참 뒤 연못물이 움직이더니, 신령님이 나왔습니다.
After a long time, the pond water moved, and a spirit came out.

“이 쇠도끼가 당신 도끼가 맞습니까?”
“Is this iron axe yours?”

“아! 예! 그 쇠도끼가 제 도끼가 맞습니다!”
“Ah! Yes! That iron axe is my axe!”

“오, 당신은 욕심이 없군. 내가 선물로 금도끼 은도끼를 드리겠습니다.”
“Oh, you are not greedy. I’ll give you a gold axe and a silver axe as a gift.”

“고맙습니다!”
“Thank you!”

신령님은 다시 연못 속으로 들어갔습니다.
The spirit went back into the pond.

이 모습을 지켜보고 있던 욕심쟁이가 도끼를 가져와서 “이히히! 난 이제 부자다!”하며 도끼를 연못에 빠뜨리고 우는 척을 했습니다.
A greedy person who was watching this took an axe and said, “Ehehe! I’m rich now!” he said, dropping the axe into the pond and pretending to cry.

그러자, 신령님이 나왔습니다.
Then, the spirit came out.

“왜 울고 있습니까?”
“Why are you crying?”

“아이고,제 하나밖에 없는 도끼를 연못에 빠뜨려서 울고 있습니다.”
“Oh, I’m crying because I dropped my one and only axe into the pond.

“아 그럼 내가 찾아드리겠습니다.”하면서 신령님은 연못에 들어갔다가 다시 나왔습니다.
“Oh, then I’ll find it for you.” The spirit entered the pond and came out again.

“이 금도끼가 당신 도끼 맞습니까?”
“Is this gold axe yours?”

“예! 그 금도끼가 제 도끼 맞습니다!”
“Yes! That gold axe is mine!”

“예끼! 이놈 어디서 거짓말을 하느냐!”하면서 연못 속으로 다시 들어갔습니다.
The spirit went back into the pond, saying, “Hey! How dare you lie?”
