This story is a Korean folk tale, Heungbu and Nolbu.
<Heungbu and Nolbu>
옛날 옛날에 흥부와 놀부라는 형제가 살았습니다.
Once upon a time, there were two brothers named Heungbu and Nolbu.
동생 흥부는 마음이 착했지만, 형 놀부는 욕심쟁이였습니다.
The younger brother was kind-hearted, but the older brother was greedy.
어느 추운 겨울날, 갑자기 형제의 아버지가 돌아가시자 놀부는 갑자기 흥부의 네 식구를 쫓아내기로 했습니다.
One cold winter day, the brothers’ father suddenly died, and Nolbu suddenly decided to kick out the four of them.
놀부: ‘ 흥! 아버지도 돌아가시고 이제 더 이상 놀부네와 같이 살 이유가 없지. 나 혼자서 만 잘 살면 되지, 왜 내가 동생까지 책임져야 하는 거야. 당장 쫓아내자!’
Nolbu: ‘Phew, now that my father is dead, there’s no reason for me to live with them anymore. I can make a good living on my own, why should I be responsible for my brother, let’s kick him out now!
그렇게 놀부는 흥부를 매몰차게 쫓아냈습니다.
So Nolbu kicked Heung-Bu out with a vengeance.
놀부: ‘흥부, 네 이놈! 지금 당장 짐을 싸서 이 집에서 당장 나가거라! 너희 식구들도 함께 나가거라’. ‘알겠느냐?’!
Nolbu: “You, Heung Boo, pack up your things and get out of this house right now, and take your family with you. Do you understand?
흥부:’아이고! 형님, 저보고 이 추운 겨울에 식구들과 빈손으로 나가라는 말씀이십니까’?
Heungbu: ‘My God, do you mean to tell me to go out empty-handed with my family in this cold winter?
놀부: ‘당연한 게 아니겠느냐! 너한테 줄 쌀은 한 가마니도 없으니 그렇게 알아라’. ‘어서 나가라 이놈!’.
Nol Boo: ‘Of course not, I don’t have a single grain of rice to give you, so you should know that’. ‘Get out of here, you bastard!’.
그렇게 쫓겨난 흥부는 가족들과 비가 오면 비가 새고, 창문 사이로 바람도 쌩쌩 들어오는 허름한 집에서 살게 되었습니다.
Kicked out, Heungbu lived with his family in a ramshackle house that leaked when it rained and the wind whistled through the windows.
먹을 것이 없어서 흥부의 아이들은 배가 고파서 날마다 울었습니다.
There was no food to eat, and the children cried every day because they were hungry.
흥부는 형 놀부를 찾아가 먹을 것을 좀 부탁을 했지만, 그런 놀부는 오히려 아무것도 주지 않고 흥부를 때려서 내쫓았습니다.
He went to his older brother, Nolbu, and asked him for some food, but instead of giving him anything, Nolbu beat him up and sent him away.
흥부: ‘형님.. 먹을 것이 없어서 제 아내와 아이들이 한 달째 밥을 제대로 못 먹고 있습니다. 제발.. 쌀 한 되만 주십시오’…’ 형님’..
Heungbu: “Brother, my wife and children haven’t eaten for a month because there’s nothing to eat. Please… just give me a bag of rice’…’ Brother’…
놀부: ‘뭐야? 그게 나랑 무슨 상관이라고?’ ‘너한테 줄 쌀 한 톨도 없으니 썩 꺼지거라’.
Nolbu: ‘What does that have to do with me?’ ‘I don’t have a single grain of rice to give you, so go away.
추운 겨울이 지나 어느새 꽃 피는 봄이 되었습니다.
After a cold winter, it was now a blossoming spring.
흥부의 집 처마 밑에는 제비들이 집을 짒고 새끼를 낳았습니다.
Under the eaves of the Heungbu’s house, swallows made their homes and laid their young.
어느 날, 큰 뱀 한 마리가 새끼 제비를 잡아먹으려고 했습니다.
One day, a big snake tried to eat the swallows’ babies.
그때 새끼 한 마리가 마당으로 떨어졌습니다. 그 새끼 제비는 그만 다리가 부러지고 말았습니다.
One of the swallows fell into the yard and broke its leg.
흥부: ‘제비야, 어서 다리가 나아야지’. ‘다음부터는 조심하거라, 알겠지?’
Heungbu: “Swallow, your leg neets to be healed. “Be careful next time, okay?
흥부는 부러진 새끼 제비 다리에 약을 발라주고 정성스럽게 돌봐주었습니다.
Heungbu put medicine on the swallow’s broken leg and took good care of it.
새끼 제비는 건강하게 자라서 다시 날 수 있게 되었고, 가을이 되어서 따뜻한 곳으로 날아갔습니다.
The swallow grew healthy and learned to fly again, and in the fall, it flew to a warmer place.
다음 해 봄이 되자, 제비들이 또다시 흥부네 집으로 날아왔습니다.
The following spring, the swallows flew back to Heungbu’s house.
그런데 제비 한 마리가 입에서 박 씨를 떨어뜨렸습니다.
However, one of the swallows dropped a gourd seed from its mouth.
흥부는 그 박 씨를 울타리 밑에 심었습니다.
He planted the gourd seed under the fence.
싹이 나고 자라서 지붕 위에 큰 박이 열렸습니다.
It sprouted, grew, and opened a large gourd on the roof.
흥부네 식구들은 모여 앉아서 박을 탔습니다.
The family gathered around and sat down to beat the gourd.
그런데 박 속에서 많은 보물이 쏟아져 나왔습니다.
As they did, many treasures poured out of the gourd.
이 소식을 들은 놀부는 욕심이 생겼습니다.
When Nolbu heard this, he became greedy.
그래서 놀부는 제비 다리를 부러뜨려 보물을 얻기로 결심하였습니다.
So he decided to break the swallow’s leg to get the treasure.
놀부: 흥부 놈이 제비 다리를 고쳐주고 보물을 얻었겠다…? 그럼 나도 해봐야지 하하하하.
Nolbu: I heard that Heungbu fixed the swallow’s leg and got the treasure…? Then I should try it too, hahahaha.
놀부는 일부러 제비의 다리를 부러뜨린 후에 천을 감아 주었습니다.
Nolbu deliberately broke the swallow’s leg and wrapped it in a cloth.
다음 해 봄, 다시 돌아온 그 제비는 놀부네 마당에도 박 씨를 떨어뜨렸습니다.
The following spring, the swallow came back and dropped a gourd seed in Nolbu’s yard.
놀부도 박 씨를 심었습니다.
Nolbu also planted gourd seeds.
놀부네 마당에도 큰 박이 열렸습니다.
A large gourd opened in Nolbu’s yard.
놀부는 잘 익은 박을 골라서 탔습니다.
Nolbu picked a ripe gourd and beat it.
놀부: ‘드디어 이제 박을 열면 보물이 한가득 있겠지..?’ ‘낄낄낄… 어서 열어보자’.
Nolbu: “At last, I can open the gourd and find a lot of treasures…?” “Giggle, giggle… Let’s open it.
그런데 박 속에 보물은 없고, 무서운 도깨비가 나타났습니다.
But there was no treasure inside, and a scary goblin appeared.
도깨비는 놀부를 잡아서 무시무시한 벌을 주고 모든 재산을 빼앗아갔습니다.
The goblin caught Nolbu, punished him terribly, and took away all his possessions.
놀부는 거지가 되었습니다.
He became a beggar.
놀부는 그동안의 자신의 행동이 부끄럽고 어리석은 짓이었다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
Nolbu realized that his behavior had been shameful and foolish.
착한 동생 흥부는 형 놀부를 도와주었습니다.
His good brother, Heungbu, helped him out.
놀부는 동생 흥부의 마음을 감사하게 생각하며, 착하게 살기로 하였습니다.
Nolbu was grateful for his brother’s kindness and decided to be good.
놀부와 흥부 형제는 행복하게 오래오래 살았습니다.
The brothers lived a long and happy life.
